I hand out red foam clown noses to friends, family,
sick people that I visit and PBA fans. Written below is
what is on the card packaged with the noses. The
movie "Hawks" saved my life by showing me that

My life has been full of bad events. I have Crohn's disease, asthma,
essential tremor and bipolar disorder. To date I have had 8 surgeries and
have taken as many as 53 pills a day. Sometimes I wake up in a pool of
my own feces due to the Crohn's. However I have been able to keep my
spirit going through, in part, my sense of humor. In the 1990s I was feeling
sorry for myself and saw a movie called "Hawks" about two terminally ill
men who escape the hospital for one last fling at life. They wore a red
clown nose as a "red badge of courage" and to remind them that their
sense of humor was the only muscle left. I have applied this to my life ever
since. While these illnesses may take my life, I will not let them beat me. I
have the motto, "When you have Crohn's, sh_t happens."
Your sense of humor, like your faith and integrity, are things no one can
take from you except you. I hold onto mine like a pit bull When something
bad happens, a period of grieving is necessary, wallowing in self-pity is
not.
The power to not be miserable is yours. Keep this nose to remind you that
bad times cannot break your spirit. Do not waste your life by making
yourself and those around you miserable. Always remember this, bad
times are inevitable, misery is optional.
